I am a developer

I write software that people use

My name is Orion. I build websites, desktop applications and custom business systems, from Abruzzo in central Italy. I have been programming since I was fifteen and teaching it for five years.

My story

Who I am

I build websites, desktop applications and custom business systems. I work from Abruzzo, on the Adriatic coast of Italy.

I wrote my first program at fifteen, and not for a school assignment: a friend of my father's sold on eBay and had a piece of software, written by another programmer, that was supposed to analyse competitors' prices and did not work. I did not know the language it was written in, so I learned it by reading that code. I did not do it for money: I did it because I wanted to understand how it was done. I have not stopped since. First the first real clients, Italian and foreign. Then the teaching. Then the bigger projects. Today I build whole platforms, and the thing that still entertains me is the same thing that entertained me at fifteen.

Where I work

Italy, and further when it makes sense

My base is in Abruzzo, on the Adriatic coast of central Italy, about two hours from Rome. Along this coast and in the towns inland I come in person without thinking about it, and I travel further when the distance makes sense.

Most of my clients are small: shops, practices, firms of ten people. A business with ten people does not need less attention than a company with a hundred, it needs somebody who picks up the phone. That is the work I am best at, and the work I prefer.

Outside Italy I work remotely, and a good share of these years' projects started that way. Two situations come up often enough to be worth naming: people from abroad who open or run a business in Italy, where half the paperwork and half the suppliers are only in Italian, and Italians running a business abroad. I speak English and Spanish, and in both of those cases being able to sit on both sides of the conversation is most of the job.

How I work

How a job starts

The first thing I ask is not a budget, it is what you need. People often arrive with an enormous project in their head and no idea what it costs, and just as often the right project for their business is a quarter of that. If I think you would be spending your money badly I tell you, including when it would suit me to keep quiet.

Then, if we can, we meet. A website, a portfolio and a few reviews all help, but what really decides things is half an hour face to face: how you talk, how you reason, whether we understand each other. With clients near me I do the first meeting in person, and it is the reason most jobs come about. Further away a video call does the same work.

During development you stay involved. I do not hand over a finished site and say goodnight: we work on it together, you say what does not fit the way you work, and I change it. When I get something wrong I say so and I fix it, without looking for excuses.

Payment comes in three stages, so neither of us is exposed: one when the quote is accepted, one halfway through, one when it goes live.

Artificial intelligence

Automation that works for you

I have used language models every day since they became serious tools, not since they became fashionable. Claude, ChatGPT and Codex, GitHub Copilot, and models that run locally such as Qwen for the cases where a company's data must not leave its own servers.

The part that matters, though, is not writing code faster: it is building products that artificial intelligence makes work. I have a platform in production that receives a tour operator's emails, extracts the services with a language model and turns them into orders inside the management system: 379 emails processed, 8,655 service blocks extracted, 221 orders generated, 90.6% of fields correct on the first pass. And an agency management system where an assistant answers questions about the company's data instead of making you build a filter.

If you have a process that somebody does by hand today, reading emails, PDFs or forms and copying data from one place to another, there is a good chance most of it can be automated. The first step is to look at it together: if it is not worth it, I say so straight away.
